Altenberg de Bergbieten is the only Grand Cru vineyard in the village of the same name. The Schmitt’s own a good portion of it, and produce wines of all three Grand Cru grapes from this site. It is perfectly situated with an ideal southeast exposure and sedimentary soils consisting of gypsum, chalk and well-drained clay. This combination is unique in Alsace, and the wines have a unique expression of minerals and bright fruit.
This Pinot Gris has an intriguing nose of nuts and some citrus. Over time, some tropical notes should develop as well. Possessing just a small percentage of residual sugar, it has high minerality and super length and volume in the mouth. Very intense, but refreshing and poised. Expect this to fill out even more while retaining it’s essential mineral backbone over the next ten years.
