The famous 1er Cru Fourchaume vineyard stretches for approximately 4km along the Serein river between the vineyards of L’Homme Mort at the western end and Vaulorent in the east, spreading over 4 municipalities (Chablis-Poinchy, Fontenay-près-Chablis, Maligny & La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne). It’s terroirs are quite diverse, but generally they lean more towards clay-based soils except at the eastern end where Vaulorent is the only 1er Cru parcel located adjacent to the famed Grand Cru zone. In fact, it is adjoining the Grand Cru terroir of Preuses, but exposed more to the west, which certainly meant that when vineyards were being classified a century ago, it tended to not be as ripe as the Grand Cru vineyards. However, with the change of climate, there is no shortage of sunshine and its cooler exposition works only to its advantage.
