| Mathieu Coste works 5.5 hectares of vines, located near Cosne sur Loire in the Coteaux de Giennois appellation. The road to Saint Père in the eastern Loire was not as clear cut as many of his colleagues'. After military service and a stop in Bordeaux to get his oenology degree, he began his career working for the Cooperative in Pouilly sur Loire producing, among other things, wines from the Coteaux de Giennois appellation. In the late 1990s, virtually the entire appellation was harvested by machine but there was one grower, Alain Paulat, who stood out as the only person to supply grapes that were harvested by hand and that were worth making into wine. This man would later be Coste's mentor. His career led him to Burgundy for a stint with Bouchard Père & Fils as well as an unsuccessful stretch with a company selling chemicals used for treating vineyards. Following this, he taught at the famed Lycée Viticole de Beaune for a few years, but it was in 2008 that he found out that Alain Paulat's 5.5 hectare domaine was for sale, and the rest is history. This estate has been farmed organically since 1982, and Mathieu Coste decided that he wanted to work alone, thus he now carries out single-handedly every aspect of the production process of his small estate.|
His vineyards are planted predominantly to Gamay and Pinot Noir to which a small production of Sauvignon is added. His vines are head-pruned, to decrease production. He plows the weeds under several times a year to nourish the vines and no outside source of fertilizer is needed. When it comes time to produce the wine, red grapes are harvested by hand and fermented on their skins and stems using the traditional Burgundian whole cluster process.
This is a winemaker that is completely in touch with the rhythms of nature and man's effect on the natural process.
The wines show enormous character with a superior ability to age gracefully revealing the potential of the terroir of this far western outpost of Burgundy which is found in the Loire region.
