Clos Vougeot
This fine estate is unique in Burgundy in that the winery is located in a grand cru vineyard. Unlike the châteaux of Bordeaux and the south of France, virtually all of the winegrowers in Burgundy live in the villages adjacent to the vineyards and the few that have vines surrounding the estate are located in relatively humble appellations. The Château de la Tour is located entirely within the walls of the famed vineyard of Clos Vougeot, just downhill from the landmark castle that bears the same name. The Clos Vougeot vineyard, by far the largest grand cru in Burgundy is divided up among eighty wine growers. Most possess a small fraction of a hectare (2.5 acres), but this estate has 6.5 hectares! Their parcels are located throughout the Clos Vougeot but most are found in the prized upper portion. Farming here has been organic for over ten years, and the harvest is done manually. Whole cluster fermentation is the rule here. Two cuvees are produced. The normal bottling is produced from vines with an average age of fourty five years and the wine is aged in 50% new and 50% one year old oak barrels. The vieilles vignes comes from vines over seventy five years old and is aged entirely in new oak.
