After tasting over 20 wines from the Ribeira Sacra and narrowing it down to just 7 potential properties, our first stop was this fine property located in the village of Abeleda (A Teixeira). Having tasted the wine on Saturday, we showed up on Monday a.m. first thing with no appointment. No answer at the winery, but a call to his cell phone brought Jorge Feijoo Gonzalez down from the steep, terraced vineyards overlooking the village in just a couple of minutes. This is pretty much a one man operation, and after tasting with him, we were tempted to call off our other tasting plans for the day. From 6 hectares of vines, roughly 3000 cs of wine are produced, mostly from the wonderful Mencia varietal, a distant cousin to Cabernet Franc and a grape that produces some of the most charming, fresh reds in Spain. The work in the vineyards is all done by hand. The results are stunning.
