Region: California
Wine: 2018 Foot Tread Rosť, Heron Lake Vineyard Wild Horse Valley

100% Pinot Noir from Heron Lake Vineyard, Wild Horse Valley appellation. 1500 ft altitude. 12.4% Alc.

Despite its location just a few miles from downtown Napa, few vineyards are as isolated and unique as Heron Lake. Perched on a high, rocky outpost above San Pablo Bay, the vineyard catches the ocean breeze as it rises up into the Vaca Mountains. The vines are planted in extremely shallow and rocky volcanic soils and this intersection of cool coastal climate and rugged soil profile creates wines that express a daring combination of freshness, acidity, depth and texture.

The Pinot Noir grapes were fully de-stemmed into bins where they were gently foot tread and left over night on the skins. The juice was pressed off the following day and fermented with native yeasts in neutral 500L French oak puncheons, undergoing full secondary ML fermentation. The wine was aged for 5 months in the same puncheons and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

This wine shows off the coastal nature of Heron Lake, emphasizing salinity and minerality over a more delicate spice. While the fruit is joyful, the wine is subtile and nuanced-floating in the world between rosť and light, fresh red. It is meant to be drunk both young and for at least a couple of years after bottling.
