Coteaux-du-Layon-Chaume, Château Pierre-Bise
The famous commune of Chaume has a variety of soils: schist, phthanite, spilite, as well as some quartz, and carboniferous soils. It is closer to the Layon river than the other villages, more sheltered from the wind, warmer, and more subject to the Layon's humidity. The complex gradation of soils is very great. Papin's sites in Chaume are amazingly diverse: they cover just about every possible soil-type and exposition in the village. This wine shows classic late harvest Chenin aromas of honey, caramel, orange peel and shortbread. In the mouth it is very long and rich, as the wines from Chaume tend to be fuller than those from other communes in the area. The magic of these wines is that, when well made, they are extremely aromatic, viscous and rich while at the same time being light, mineral and low in alcohol. |
