Board & Batten pays homage to the various barns originally constructed on the Estate in the 1890s, noted for their distinct exterior siding. In their assembly, each board and accompanying wooden strip – or batten – is an independent unit then joined together to form a strong structure. Comprised of fruit from our biodynamically farmed Estate, the Proprietary Red is crafted in similar cohesive fashion, as a stand-alone blend built from individual varietal expressions. The foundation of this vintage is predominantly fruit-driven Zinfandel (65%), with savory Syrah (35%) adding structured depth to balance out the blend. Following a 20-month élevage in neutral tight-grained French oak barrel and puncheon, this Board & Batten was held in bottle for an extended period prior to release, resulting in a well-integrated, refined union.

The 2019 Board & Batten Estate Proprietary Red opens with aromas of plush blueberry, wild blackberry, ground nutmeg, and a perfumed tint of Earl Grey tea. A confirming palate of bold, dark-fruited flavors seams effortlessly with savory hints of black olives, fennel seed, and earthy white peppercorn. Enlivening acidity joined by round, velvety tannins makes for a delectable, lasting finish.
