Sustainable farming

Christoph Donabaum’s small, ambitious winery grows vines in some of the steepest and most demanding territories in the Wachau. Together with his parents, he cultivates 3.5 hectares in total. Yet the wines that are made from the grapes of the barren vineyards of the Zornberg, the Point, the 1000-Eimer Berg, Offenberg and the Setzberg are highly impressive. Covering all categories, the family produces elegant and mineral Veltliner and Riesling, using some vines that are more than 60 years old, and which differ in character according to their specific vineyards and harvest times. Physiological maturity and healthy grape material is a key priority for the Donabaums. They produce almost all of the Wachau styles, ranging from the Steinfeder to the single vineyard Smaragd, in stainless steel tanks, which enhances the crystal-clear fruit and the cool character of the Spitzer Graben.

In the management of our winery, we rely on sustainability.
This means: sustainability in the vineyard (no insecticides, no herbicides, predominantly biological crop protection, greening and only proper tillage, a lot of manual mowing, manual harvesting is a basic condition for us), as well as in production (safe water), with employees and business administration. So this is a holistic approach. We are also a member of the Vinea Wachau nobilis districtus. This association is an area protection association. This association implements sustainable winegrowing throughout the whole Wachau Valley.
