Xavier Clua and his wife Rosa Domenech farm 15 hectares separately from his family’s other 15 around the village of Vilalba dels Arcs in Catalunya just south of Monsant. This is the heart of the Terra Alta DO and the high elevation makes for hot days and cool, windy nights, perfect for growing Garnacha and other Catalan varietals. Wine and olive growing have been the heart of this region’s economy since medieval times and both Xavi and Rosa brought new ideas back to this village from working in wineries in France in their early careers. This influence is clearly noticeable in their winemaking style, with an emphasis on balance and ripeness that we rarely see in Spain.
In 2010 they set up shop in a new winery facility at the entrance to the village, which gave them plenty of room and state of the art equipment to better succeed at balancing their artisanal style with the expectations of the modern wine market.
